Communication Trumps Performance

Synopsis
You might think that people should bring their best self and abilities to work every day. You might expect that people would be engaged in their work, meet problems creatively, and communicate in an open and honest manner. You might think this because, well, people are professionals and they are paid to perform accordingly.

Hmmmmm, no.

Managers in every business everywhere in the world spend much of their time seeking foolproof ways to motivate their staffs to perform, to display higher levels of engagement, initiative, and responsibility.

But Communication Trumps Performance, because there is virtually no outcome or output that is not dependent on the quality of communication and the strength of relationships.

Organizations that do not encourage and support authentic communication suppress the very spirit and energy with which people work. If people aren't safe to speak their truth, they will collapse and work with half a heart and no real enthusiasm. When people are not encouraged to communicate authentically, or when they don't feel safe, they don't tell the truth about their work, or the state of their project, they don't contribute their creative ideas, they won't contradict a manager's point of view even when it is inaccurate and might jeopardize a project.

They do spend time processing their frustrations, resentments, and disappointments with colleagues. They express their resentment as poor performance. The very energy, enthusiasm, initiative, and creativity that managers want is nowhere to be seen.

What to do? Understand the importance of consciously creating and behaviorally defining Core Communication Principles that everyone agrees to practice. This talk presents a simple way to work with the members of a team, department, or organization to create a vibrant, fearless, truthful communication environment in order for performance to thrive.
